Description
As King, he knew that he was envied by all, feared by many and loved by none. Riding after a wild boar, he leaves the rest of the party far behind, but finds that he is outpaced by a laughing figure on a black mare. The two meet and greet each other, neither realising that one is the King of England; the other a Saxon cleric. Thomas Becket criticises Henry’s riding and his frankness wins the King’s favour. The two men become devoted friends, for Henry finds Becket is a more than a scholar. He seems to know where the prettiest girls are to be found and where the best wine in
all England is hidden.
