Following on from the interest in our article last month on the intricacies of our audio production procedures, following is a bit more information. Some interesting facts for your trivia file:
Transcription discs were first introduced into Australian radio when Miss Grace Gibson was seconded to Australia back in 1934 by her American employer to help 2GB-Macquarie set up their Artransa (American Radio Transcription Agencies) operation to produce and disseminate radio serials to stations across the nation.
The original discs were 16 inches wide and contained about 12 minutes of audio on each side. Thus a 104 episode ‘quarter-hour’ serial comprised 52, hefty bakelite discs!
Unlike later on, these discs were played from the INSIDE out, as in those days the ‘needles’ (or styli) were made of steel and would wear down when used. The theory was to start with a brand new needle playing from the inside and as the needle wore out it rotated through more widely spaced grooves thus averaging out the impact of the reduced fidelity being played. As needles came to be made of better materials (like diamond styli) this no longer mattered and they started playing from the outside in like contemporary album discs.
In the mid-50s, recording technology had improved to allow for all this audio to fit onto 10 inch discs (still just 12 minutes on a side, of course!
Finally, microgroove recording became a reality and the industry moved into 12 inch discs containing two whole episodes on each side of a vinyl disc, meaning a 104 episode serial would fit on to just 26 ‘lightweight’ albums.

Here’s a tip...want to ’try before you buy’, or not entirely sure if that’s the show you’re after?
Click the ‘Sample Episode’ tab on our website and you can hear the first episode of each the titles we currently have available (don’t forget we’re constantly adding new shows to the line-up).
Sometimes you’re asked to ‘grab a gift’, having been told the intro sounds something like ‘this’ … other times there’s confusion with a similar sounding title of a show … a visit to ‘Sample Episode’ can help solve the problem.
Alternatively, call us for a sample CD and we’ll put one in the post for you, along with our catalogue.
