A new name for Australia was created 40 years ago… CACTUS ISLAND

Forty years ago, a cult classic was born in Australia. Thanks to the characterful identities in Australian politics a political and social satire was created by Triffique Productions.

Initially starring Ross Higgins, Kevin Golsby, Robyn Moore and Keith Scott, it all started out as a ‘one off’ 65 episode series (running for just 3 months, on a Monday-Friday broadcast schedule).

The inspiration for the series was Paul Keating’s memorable ‘banana republic’ comment: that was all it took to get the comedy juices flowing in the head of chief writer Doug Edwards of Triffique Productions. The much-loved leader of Cactus Island was King Bonza the Charismatic who ruled the island benevolently with his Queen Hayseed at his side.

The series was riotously hilarious, became an instant hit on all the stations which carried it,
forcing Doug Edwards to create another another 65 episodes…then another, and yet another.
It actuallyended up in ongoing production for an incredible 33 years, with well over 7,000 episodes recorded.

The vast majority of episodes featured just TWO incredibly talented voice actors, Keith Scott and
Robyn Moore playing every character that Doug created: an incredible achievement in its own right!

GraceGibsonRadio.com has a massive amount of episodes available for your ‘home entertainment’
including ‘Cactus – The Early Years’ and the ‘Best Of Cactus’ from 1999 right through to 2021 –
with the sole exception of 2000 when no ‘Best Of’ was released (for no known reason that anyone
can remember!).
